Cheney Okays U.S. Talks With Iran Concerning Iraq
May 13 (EIRNS)--Early news reports on Sunday said that a spokeswoman for Vice President Dick Cheney confirmed to news media that the U.S. is willing to talk to Iran, provided the talks' subject matter is limited to Iraq. This announcement was in response to an announcement by the Iranian Foreign Ministry that their government had agreed to a formal request from the U.S., conveyed through the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, to discuss Iraqi security during meetings in Baghdad. Later in the day, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council confirmed to reporters traveling with the President to Jamestown, Virginia, that the talks will take place in the next few weeks, and the U.S. will be represented by U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker. The spokesman declined to say which side had requested the talks.
