Iranian President Visited UAE The Day After Cheney's Roadshow Left Town
May 13 (EIRNS)--U.S. Vice President Cheney's "World Annhilation Tour" - which featured Cheney threatening Iran from aboard an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf - departed the United Arab Emirates on Saturday. On Sunday the UAE hosted a visit by Iranian President Ahmadinejad, the first visit by an Iranian head of state since 1979. In 1971, when the UAE was formed, the Shah took over three islands in the Persian Gulf that were claimed by Iran and two of the UAE's sheikhdoms. The islands remain a source of tension between the countries, but the UAE is Iran's biggest trading partner. The President of the UAE called on the international community to "take into consideration ... the interest of all counties and peoples of the region, in a way that would ensure security ... and continued development."
