U.S. Blocking Some G8 Climate Change Targets
May 13 (EIRNS)--In preparatory discussions between officials of the G8 countries, the U.S. has voiced opposition to several aspects of the draft agreement on climate change being prepared for next month's G8. While not challenging the false assumptions of Global Warming as a whole, the U.S. nonetheless is objecting to the target of keeping the global temperature rise below 2 degrees celsius this century and to the target of halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The U.S. is also seeking to remove a section acknowledging that the UN is the "appropriate forum" for agreeing on further action. BBC also reports that the US officials are questioning the draft's call for the establishment of a global carbon market.
