Global Showdown Is On: Russia Formally Suspends Arms Control Treaty for Europe

May 23 (LPAC)--LaRouche's warnings that without a profound change of relations among the four leading powers--the U.S.A., Russia, China and India--the world is sliding into World War III, were corroborated today in remarks by Russia's First Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov.

Ivanov told a Moscow press conference that Russia has declared a moratorium on the CFE (Conventional Forces Reduction in Europe) treaty, according to the Russian television program Vesti 24. The statement is a clear response to provocations from the West, which include plans to station U.S. anti-missile systems in eastern European nations along Russia's border.

Ivanov said that Russia will no longer abide by any of the treaty's clauses until all countries addressed by the treaty have ratified it. Russia will not host any foreign inspectors on its territory, nor notify foreign governments about troop movements.

In a related move, the Russian defense ministry announced today it will begin stationing an air defense system around Moscow beginning July 1. The system will be based on S-400 ground-to-air missiles of the most modern type.

However, offers to discuss the worsening crisis have also been made. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, visiting Austria together with President Valdimir Putin, said in Vienna this afternoon that an "emergency conference on the future of the CFE treaty is urgent."
