Lebanese have been attempting to avoid civil war ever since the Syrian army withdrew two years ago.

Discussions with Washington-based intelligence sources point to a number of critical events unfolding:

*The arrival of three U.S. transport planes full of weapons and ammunition in Lebanon on Saturday, May 26, could actually worsen the bloodshed. While the official story is that these weapons are to be delivered to the Lebanese Army, one Lebanon specialist cautioned, "Why does the Lebanese Army need three planeloads of weapons to fight a group that has 400-500 fighters?"

This specialist noted the weapons could be part of the covert shipments to various guerilla and militia groups, like the Fatah al Islam itself. As LPAC reported this week, citing sources from EIR , and several reports from New Yorker magazine investigative reporter, Seymour Hersh, Fatah al Islam was one of the Sunni groups armed and financed by the agreement between Vice President Dick Cheney, and Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan, to build up a force that could "rival" the Shi'ite Hezbollah.

The real aim of building up these militias inside Lebanon for Cheney et al. is to make Lebanon a "failed state," and as such, a potential springboard for other "preemptive" strikes. Another piece of this picture is the plan by NATO to establish a permanent military base in Lebanon at Tripoli, as reported by the Lebanese newspaper, Al Diyar, and other sources.

*The storming of the Palestinian refugee camp by the Lebanese Army was approved by the Palestine Liberation Organization through its representative Abbas Zaki, but this was the first time that the army of Lebanon has violated the refugee camp since agreements were made in 1969. This decision reflects the deterioration of the situation, and may be impossible to reverse, said the above-mentioned Lebanon specialist.

The source also said that the key to the mess lies in Washington, where Cheney is running the "Middle East policy" through convicted liar Elliot Abrams, an operative of the neo-cons and collaborator of the fascist Netanyahu forces in Israel. The Cheney/Abrams/Netanyahu nexus will also use the Lebanon crisis to also block any moves towards a peace settlement in Israel-Palestine.
