These areas have been the scene of recent fighting with terrorists of the Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). Some Turkish media speculate that these "zones" will be off-limits to civilian flights.

This action follows the incursion of several thousand Turkish troops across the Iraq border in recent days, and shows that Turkey is continuing, against its will, to be drawn into the spreading contagion of war in Southwest Asia. Turkey has demanded that the US curb the activities of PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, but the US has not done so. Indeed, it has been widely reported that the Cheney/Bush administration is subsidizing and supporting PKK terrorist activities against Turkey's neighbor Iran.
